Contextual Research from understanding popular music.
I have got some contextual research from a book called 'Understanding popular music' i found some useful information about music, and music videos in general also many other sub genres. Some sub genres are Music on the silver screen, The small screen, and music videos.
The small screen, after the 1950s people had seen music being a really big hit and people was really starting to notice how important it was, the small screen in other words televisions, at the time TV was a traditional way of family entertainment, this is because of TVs being new and it would have been the latest technology, From the 1950s there was a lot of shows, however one main show that stood out was called 'Top of the pops' and 'The old grey Whistle' these two shows were aired in the 1960s, these established the power of musical television to shape tastes. Although pop and rock music was popular, there still was no music videos, however moving to the 2000s, music really struck to the top, there was artist like Michael Jackson and Robbie Williams, Michael Jackson performed a famously known song called 'Billie Jean' on TV, and it was one of the first ever performed live on TV which reached 50 million views.
To conclude, I can take all of my research and use it for my final project, what I could take from my research is that I could change the fact that my music video is not going to star the actual artist from the original music video, I want to do this because people in the 90s are used to expecting the artist to perform and sing, however I want to work around my research and change it and make my music video unique.
Popular music on the silver screen, this refers to music in the 1920s to 1930s, during that period music had a really important relationship with films, this is because at that era films were being created using no audio in other words this is called a silent film. From my primary research i found out that during the films were being shown live to the audience they would have a live musical accompaniment meaning they would have people playing instruments creating music to fit the film, however the main instrument they used is a piano. This was used mainly in the 1930s and counted to be important into the 1960s. Moreover the main genres of popular music would be, vein, colourful and would have salutary stories to it. Moving into the mid 1950s music changed, this changed by establishing Rock n roll, this had a huge impact in music because this helped people to create new things for example after rock music was created, people would create documentaries called rockumentaries, this is when music was introduced into documentaries but mainly rock music.
